Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog

FAMILIES & STUDENTS

  • Thank you for considering Okmulgee Public Schools for your child’s education. We are thrilled about the possibility of welcoming your family into our Bulldog community. Okmulgee Public Schools makes decisions about transfers in accordance with district policy and state law. OPS will begin accepting transfer applications for the next academic school year on the first Monday in June.

You may download our policy on student transfers by visiting our District Policies Page - Student Transfers Policy 4002

To have a student considered for a transfer, the parent/guardian must complete the following steps:

    1. Complete the required State Department of Education form to apply for a transfer online:

Click here for the OSDE Student Transfer Application

*You will need your child’s state testing number to complete the form. It is provided by your child’s school l and starts with 1-0-0.

    2. Complete the Okmulgee Public Schools Enrollment Packet available at the site which you intend to enroll. (One per child)

When will I know if my child's transfer request has been approved?

    • Decisions about transfers for the next academic year will be made after the July 1 capacity determination. We will contact parents/guardians directly about the approval status of their child’s transfer.
    • New transfers are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who attended the district on a transfer during the previous school year will be automatically accepted pending approval from the district.
    • The law gives special consideration for the following groups:
      •  a. Students with disabilities: Prior to the approval of the transfer of a child on an individualized education program (IEP), a joint IEP conference must be conducted between the district of residence and the receiving district. The receiving district must establish the availability of the appropriate staff, and services prior to approving the transfer.
      • b. Military dependent students: A student who applies for a transfer and whose parent/guardian is an active member of the military or a member of the military reserve on active duty cannot be denied a transfer because of capacity limitations.
      • c. Students of Teachers: A child of a parent/legal guardian employed as a “teacher” in a district may transfer into that district regardless of capacity. Under the law, the definition of teacher includes teachers, nurses, librarians, counselors and administrators who are certified employees.
      • d. Students in foster care: Any student in foster care currently placed in the home of another student enrolled in a district may transfer to said district regardless of capacity. Additionally, students in foster care may complete any number of transfer in a given school year and are not subject to the two-transfer limit.

Are there limitations to the number of school transfers that can be approved?
For the district to accept a transfer, enrollment in the grade the parent/guardian requests must be under the district-established capacity. The district’s capacity and vacancy numbers for each grade and school are listed below.

Why might a transfer be denied?

    • Transfers may be denied if the district has exceeded its enrollment capacity for the grade level at the requested school site; 2) incident of student discipline for reason(s) outlined in 70 O.S. § 24-101.3; and/or 3) the student has a history of absences, which is defined as ten or more unexcused absences in one semester 70 O.S. § 8-101(A-B).

    What other requirements are necessary?

    • Transfers for siblings must be considered separately and separate forms must be completed.
    • Transfer students must abide by OSSAA eligibility requirements for OSSAA-sanctioned activities.
    • The district will not accept or deny a transfer based upon the student's race, color, sex, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity, religion, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, income level, proficiency in the English language, measure of achievement, aptitude or athletic ability.
    • State law limits the student transfers to no more than two (2) times per school year to one or more school districts in which the student does not reside. Exceptions to this limit will exist for students in foster care or those who have a parent on full-time active military duty.

  • At Okmulgee Schools we endeavor to see every child develop the full promise of their potential.  This means having to achieve a peculiar balance of student discipline, academic rigor, character development, and pro-social maturation.  We do this while trying to be fair and understanding yet stern and steadfast at the same time.  Through all of this, we try to communicate any issues to parents and students alike while working together to ensure progress toward those goals. Even so, occasionally a parent will have a complaint or concern they feel needs attention.  This Parent’s Guide to Resolving School Concerns or Complaints has been developed to assist parents in presenting their case and ensuring their concern is heard. Feel free to use this form in helping you pursue a resolution to your concern or complaint.  While the completion of this form is not required, it may help you to organize your thoughts, identify the facts at hand, and guide you through the process.

State test results, when combined with other information (i.e. homework, classwork, report card grades, and local assessments), can help you and the teacher work together to support your student's growth. Your student's State ID number is required to access their scores. If you do not have this number, please contact your student's site at Okmulgee Public Schools.
